About Kidlapse
Kidlapse is a project from Robert Ellison. I wanted to create a timelapse movie of my kids growing up but I had never been organized enough to shoot photos or videos in the same place every year (or month) in order to make this process easy. Like most parents I have a huge number of photos to choose from and I realized that it should be possible to rotate and align these to create the source material for the video I had in mind.
Rather than spending months in Photoshop I turned to machine learning to automate the process. Kidlapse uses facial recognition technology and then rotates and zooms as necessary to align each picture. The source photos are then cross-faded and rendered into a timelapse.
At first I was just planning to use this for my kids but I realized that many parents are in the same boat - many photos, a desire for a unique keepsake and a dread of the extensive editing required to pull it off. I decided to launch Kidlapse as a web service to make the technology accessible to everyone.
